  1. Sri Lanka’s dominant victory over Afghanistan
  2. Afghanistan’s collapse and Sri Lanka whitewash in Pallekele
  3. Sri Lanka’s record-breaking win led by Nissanka and Avishka

In a dazzling display of dominance, Sri Lanka swept aside Afghanistan in a commanding seven-wicket victory in the third and final ODI at Pallekele, sealing a comprehensive 3-0 whitewash of the series.

Afghanistan, after a promising start with fifties from Rahmat and Omarzai, suffered a dramatic collapse, losing six wickets for just 43 runs and ultimately being bundled out for 266. Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Madushan who claimed three wickets for 45 runs, put the visitors under immense pressure, restricting their total.

Facing a target of 267, Sri Lanka’s batsmen made light work of the chase, reaching the mark in just 35.2 overs. The heroics were led by Pathum Nissanka, who notched up his second century of the series with a magnificent 118 off 101 balls. Nissanka’s stellar performance not only propelled him to the top of the run-scorers’ list in the series with 346 runs but also saw him achieve the milestone of becoming the fastest Sri Lankan to reach 2000 ODI runs, achieving the feat in just 53 games.

However, it was Avishka Fernando who set the stage on fire with a blistering 91 off 66 deliveries, including 10 fours and five sixes. Despite an early chance that went begging due to a missed catch by Ikram Alikhil, Avishka’s onslaught continued relentlessly, dismantling Afghanistan’s bowling attack with disdain. His partnership with Nissanka laid the foundation for Sri Lanka’s victory, as they piled on 173 runs for the opening stand – their second 150-plus partnership of the series.

Although both Nissanka and Avishka fell in quick succession, Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka stepped up to the challenge, adding 78 runs off just 55 balls. In the end, it was Asalanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama who calmly guided Sri Lanka to victory, with 88 balls to spare.

Sri Lanka’s emphatic performance not only secured a whitewash but also showcased their depth and firepower in both batting and bowling departments. Meanwhile, Afghanistan will rue missed opportunities and a collapse that cost them a chance to salvage a win in the series.

As Sri Lanka celebrates their dominant display, attention now turns to their upcoming fixtures, where they will look to carry forward this momentum and continue their winning streak on the international stage.
