Delhi Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena has raised serious concerns about the “pathetic state” of hospitals under the city government, prompting a response from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. In a letter dated February 3, Mr. Saxena highlighted the dire situation and referred to recent media reports, while Mr. Kejriwal responded on Sunday, acknowledging the letter.

Mr. Saxena expressed his disappointment and concern, emphasizing the need for a world-class healthcare system that prioritizes citizens’ well-being over systemic dysfunction and neglect. The Lt Governor cited scathing observations from the Delhi High Court regarding the dismal state of affairs in government hospitals and called for immediate and decisive actions to address the critical concerns.

The letter from Mr. Saxena also touched upon issues raised in media reports related to court cases involving Delhi government-run hospitals. He stressed that these issues are not mere administrative oversights but direct violations of the fundamental duties of the government, impacting the fundamental right to health and tarnishing the reputation of the nation’s capital.

As part of his constitutional obligations, Mr. Saxena urged Mr. Kejriwal to provide a factual report at the earliest on the state of health infrastructure in major Delhi government hospitals. He reminded the Chief Minister that the government had inherited a robust health infrastructure, complemented by health institutions run by the Centre and ample funds and medical manpower.

The Lt Governor emphasized that the court’s observations present a unique opportunity for introspection and positive change, urging immediate action to address the serious situation. He requested a constructive and time-bound response from Mr. Kejriwal, including a factual report on the state of health infrastructure in major Delhi government hospitals.

The exchange between the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister underscores the urgency of addressing the challenges facing Delhi’s healthcare system and the importance of transparent reporting and corrective measures. The citizens of Delhi hope for swift and effective actions to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services in the capital.
