Mallikarjun Kharge Assumes Chairperson Role in INDIA Bloc; Nitish Kumar Declines Convener Post
In a significant development for the opposition INDIA bloc, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has been appointed as the Chairperson during a virtual meeting of the alliance’s top leaders held on Saturday. This decision comes after weeks of internal deliberations among the alliance parties over key roles within the INDIA bloc.
One of the major decisions taken during the virtual meeting was to name Mallikarjun Kharge as the Chairperson, marking a crucial step in strengthening the unity of the opposition ahead of the 2024 general elections. The move is seen as an attempt to forge a cohesive strategy to counter the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The virtual meeting also saw Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar being offered the role of the Convener within the alliance. However, in a surprising turn of events, Nitish Kumar declined the post, insisting that the responsibility should be shouldered by a leader from the Congress party.
JD(U) leader Sanjay Jha, who participated in the meeting, revealed Kumar’s decision, stating that the Bihar Chief Minister expressed his willingness to accept the role only if there was unanimous agreement among all alliance parties.
The appointment of a Convener has been a contentious issue within the INDIA bloc, with the JD(U) advocating for Nitish Kumar to assume the position. However, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) opposed this choice, leading to internal disagreements.
The INDIA bloc, formed with the objective of presenting a united front against the BJP in the upcoming elections, has been grappling with various challenges, including the distribution of seats and the appointment of key leaders to crucial positions.
Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party, and Mamata Banerjee, the supremo of the Trinamool Congress, were not present during the virtual meeting. However, they are expected to be informed about the decisions taken regarding the leadership roles.
Nitish Kumar’s decision to decline the Convener post adds another layer of complexity to the dynamics within the INDIA bloc. The reluctance to accept the role could be seen as an effort to maintain harmony within the alliance, considering the differences in opinion regarding the appointment.
The virtual meeting addressed several important matters, including the seat-sharing agenda and the participation of alliance members in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, a key initiative ahead of the elections. The meeting brought together leaders from various parties, emphasizing the need for collaboration and coordination to present a formidable challenge to the ruling BJP.
Among the attendees was Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), who joined the meeting via video conferencing from Mumbai. MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and leader of the DMK, along with Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, participated in the deliberations through video conferencing from Chennai.
This virtual meeting marked the alliance’s second attempt to discuss critical issues, with a previous attempt a few days ago not materializing. As the INDIA bloc navigates internal complexities and strives for a unified approach, the decisions made during this meeting will likely shape the alliance’s strategy and outlook in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
