In a significant move aimed at shedding light on the economic mismanagement during the Congress-led UPA government, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the Modi government will soon present a White Paper comparing the state of the Indian economy before and after 2014. The White Paper is expected to be tabled in the upcoming parliamentary session.
During her interim budget speech, Sitharaman emphasized the need to draw lessons from the economic challenges faced during the previous regime. She stated, “We lost 10 glorious years… Every area of the economy was ridden by problems from banks to minerals,” highlighting the struggles encountered in various sectors.
The Finance Minister explained that the White Paper would focus on showcasing the impact of positive steps that could have been taken to address the economic issues prevailing before 2014. The document aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the economic conditions during the UPA era and the subsequent transformation under the Modi government.
“It is now appropriate to look at where we were then till 2014 and where we are now, only to draw lessons from the mismanagement of those years. The government will lay a White Paper on the table of the House,” Sitharaman announced, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability.
In an interaction with Network 18, Sitharaman expressed the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges step by step and putting the governance systems in order. She highlighted the successful efforts of the Modi government in revitalizing the economy, stating, “The economy got a new vigour. The fruits of development started reaching the people at scale. The country got a new sense of purpose and hope. Naturally, the people blessed the government with a bigger mandate (2019).”
The Finance Minister stressed the government’s strong belief in a ‘nation-first’ approach, outlining how this ideology guided the successful economic initiatives. The Budget session of Parliament, marking the last session of the 17th Lok Sabha before the upcoming General Elections, commenced on Wednesday. The presentation of the White Paper is anticipated to provide valuable insights into the economic trajectory of the nation over the past decade.
