In a swift rebuttal to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent assertions regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s caste, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders took to social media to share what they called the “truth” about the Prime Minister’s background. The flurry of responses came shortly after Rahul Gandhi claimed during his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Odisha that PM Modi “was not born in the OBC (Other Backward Class) category.”
Disputing Rahul Gandhi’s statements, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and BJP leader Amit Malviya shared a gazette notification, dated October 27, 1999, which recognized PM Modi’s caste as OBC (Other Backward Class). This revelation directly countered Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that PM Modi’s caste was conferred the OBC tag by the BJP in 2000.
According to Amit Malviya, Rahul Gandhi’s claim is “a blatant lie,” emphasizing that PM Modi’s OBC status was officially acknowledged two years before he assumed the role of Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Furthermore, a government statement released in response to the controversy confirmed that the Modi Ghanchi caste, to which PM Modi belongs, was included in the Gujarat government’s list of socially and educationally backward classes and OBCs. This inclusion was validated by a notification issued by the Gujarat government on July 25, 1994.
Adding to the narrative, a blog post on narendramodi.in from 2014 elucidated the historical context behind the inclusion of the Modi-Ghanchi caste in the OBC list. It revealed that the Mandal Commission, after a survey in Gujarat, had previously listed the Modi-Ghanchi caste as OBC under index 91(A). Subsequently, the Government of India’s notification on April 4, 2000, formalized this classification.
Crucially, the blog post underscored that these notifications were enacted when PM Modi held no executive position of power, thereby refuting any insinuations of political manipulation.
In light of these revelations, the BJP’s prompt response aimed to dispel what they deemed as misinformation propagated by the Congress leader. As political tensions simmer over caste-related narratives, both parties continue to exchange salvos in the run-up to crucial electoral contests.
