Two bomb explosions have rocked Pakistan’s Balochistan province, claiming the lives of at least 22 individuals just a day before the general elections, according to officials.

The first blast occurred in front of an independent candidate’s party office in Pishin district, where 14 people lost their lives. Shortly after, a second explosion rocked Qillah Saif Ullah district, located approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) away, claiming the lives of eight individuals. Numerous others sustained injuries in the two devastating blasts.

The incident occurred outside the election office of a local independent candidate, who, according to officials, was meeting his polling agent at the time of the attack.

Details surrounding the second blast are still emerging. According to a senior police official speaking to AFP news agency, the explosion occurred in Qila Saifullah’s main bazaar, targeting the election office of the JUI-F party.

Violent incidents have been escalating in both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in the lead-up to Thursday’s vote.

Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the cause of the blasts, while the injured have been swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Despite the tragic events, the Balochistan government has affirmed that the electoral process will proceed as planned.

Dehradun: In a pivotal move, the Uttarakhand government, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, approved the draft report for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in a cabinet meeting held at the chief minister’s residence on Sunday evening. The five-member UCC panel had submitted the draft report on Friday, setting the stage for its presentation in a specially-convened assembly session scheduled for February 6.

Once the assembly passes the UCC, Uttarakhand will make history by becoming the first state post-independence to implement the Uniform Civil Code. The groundbreaking development has already attracted interest from other states, with Assam and Gujarat expressing a desire to adopt the “Uttarakhand UCC model.”

The Sunday evening cabinet meeting, focused solely on endorsing the UCC draft report, caught many by surprise. Earlier speculations had suggested that the cabinet, which convened on Saturday without addressing the UCC issue, would likely pass the draft on Tuesday during the assembly session.

According to sources, the cabinet meeting on Sunday had a singular agenda – to approve the UCC draft report. Before receiving the official nod, the entire cabinet was given a comprehensive presentation of the report. Interestingly, no official briefing followed the cabinet’s deliberations on Sunday.

The UCC draft committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, submitted a comprehensive 740-page report divided into four volumes on February 2. The culmination of this nearly two-year-long process, which began on May 27, 2022, marks a significant step toward the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.

Key proposals put forth by the committee include the prohibition of practices like polygamy, halala, iddat, and child marriage. The UCC draft also advocates for a uniform age for girls’ marriage across all religions, equal inheritance rights for both genders, and mandatory registration of live-in relationships. Notably, scheduled tribes (STs) have been exempted from the purview of the UCC bill, addressing concerns raised by the tribal population, which constitutes around 3% of the state and had expressed dissent against the UCC due to their special status.

The Lt Governor emphasized that the court’s observations present a unique opportunity for introspection and positive change, urging immediate action to address the serious situation. He requested a constructive and time-bound response from Mr. Kejriwal, including a factual report on the state of health infrastructure in major Delhi government hospitals.

The West Bengal Chief Minister challenged Congress to take on the BJP and defeat it in states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Despite attempts to reconcile, Banerjee remained steadfast in her refusal to allocate seats to Congress in West Bengal.

The Congress’s yatra through six districts of North Bengal might have triggered Banerjee’s stance, according to sources. She criticized the event as a “mere spectacle for photo opportunities,” suggesting it lacked genuine intent.

Banerjee remarked that Congress did not inform her about the yatra and questioned their purpose in Bengal. Despite being an alliance partner of INDIA, they did not inform us, she said, adding that she got to know through administrative sources.

Banerjee had earlier expressed interest in a seat-sharing arrangement with Congress, but the party aligned with the CPI(M), forcing her to go it alone in the Lok Sabha polls. She asserted that the TMC will work with other regional parties after the elections. In the 2019 elections, TMC secured 22 seats, Congress won two, and the BJP bagged 18 seats in the state.

Tensions escalated when TMC’s offer of two seats, based on Congress’ 2019 Lok Sabha election performance, was deemed insufficient. The TMC had previously allied with the Congress in the 2001 assembly polls, the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, and the 2011 assembly polls, leading to the ousting of the CPI(M)-led Left Front government of 34 years.
